When you start something new there is always this sense of "rejection". "Are people really going to be interested in this?", "What if I fail?", "Am I wasting my time?"...A bajillion questions that go through your mind. Well, I am just going to dive in head first and say EFF IT. I've been doing this for almost 15 years... I have become a master of my craft and I just want to share everything I know about skin in order for you to make a more informed decision.
Have you ever gone to dinner somewhere on a whim? or saw a new hairstylist by just calling a salon and saying "I will see whomever"... Some of us have, but I bet the majority of you have only gone somewhere or purchased something or saw a hairstylist, nail tech or massage therapist because it was a referral. I believe that by not educating clients on topics like skin and skin health, I am doing you a disservice. I want you to feel confident in your skin choices and products and services, so the only way to do that is by education.
Anyway, I digress....
The subject today is ANTIOXIDANTS! Antioxidants came to public attention in the 1990s, when scientists began to understand that free radical damage was involved in the early stages of cancer. There have been many buzz words in the food and esthetic world when it comes to Antioxidants... Resveratrol & Vitamin C, easily come to mind... but there are so many wonderful antioxidants to choose from and they all play a different role in skincare.
Fun Fact: Epidemiological studies show that higher intakes of antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, and legumes are associated with a lower risk of chronic oxidative stress-related diseases like cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
So what do Antioxidants have to do with skin?
Antioxidants help protect the skin's surface from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and environmental aggressors like UV and pollution. Antioxidants are often found in skin care products because of their powerful anti-aging benefits and they help to repair the skin from within.
Whats the problem with Oxadative Stress? I am glad you asked (I am thinking your internal monologue is asking ;) ) Oxidative stress breaks down collagen, hinders skin’s natural repair process AND triggers inflammation. Oftentimes, these effects show up as fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, acne breakouts and a blotchy skin tone. By scavenging free radicals, antioxidants can help prevent and correct these visible signs and help your skin to look more youthful!
Antioxidants are SO COOL!
What ingredients should you be looking for when it comes to Antioxidants? I have compiled an easy list for you to reference when hunting for great skincare.
Vitamin C
Resveratrol
Niacinamide
Coenxyme Q10
Vitamin E
Retinol
polyphenols
And, what's so wonderful about Antioxidants in skincare is they're like a party on your face... the more the merrier and you can never overdo it. So, Antioxidant away!

With so many options available on the market, I always recommend aiming for the most natural ingredients. Todays skin care world is filled with so many toxins and fillers that potentially compromise our health. I recommend visiting the EWG Healthy Living app to see how toxic some of your beauty products might be.
